Uelsen, De 09-10-2009 040 © Alle rechten voorbehouden Bulletin board on the front of the church, an Evangelical Reformed church since about 1580.  Before then, it was briefly a Lutheran church, and for centuries before then, Roman Catholic.  This is in a small part of Germany that is surrounded on 3 sides by the Netherlands, where the Reformed church was the 'official' one.  The people here know both cultures and languages well, as did the Masselinks.  Even though the official language here is German, most speak Dutch fluently.  That's the way it is close to the borders.
